Did you know that a bat can consume up to half their body weight in insects each night? Bats are fascinating creatures. You can learn more about the bats in our area by joining the BMN bat team on their bat monitoring outings. You will see bats as they leave their roosts and fly around the area. As well, you will have the opportunity to detect and identify the bats by using an ultrasound echolocation detector.
Each one hour outing begins just before dusk as the bats start to emerge from their roosts. There are 11 bat monitoring outings scheduled this summer (most are on Friday evenings) including:
Colony Farm: May 12, June 2, June 16, July 28, and August 11
Widgeon Reserve: June 9, June 23, August 4, and August 19
Como Lake: July 7 and August 26
The outings will be rescheduled in the case of rain. Check the web site for updates. If you are interested in coming on an outing, contact Christina Saremba at firstname.lastname@example.org or 604.351.9643 to get the meeting location details.
