Young Naturalists' Club

Young Naturalists’ Club (YNC) members discover BC’s plants and animals (birds, bugs, fish and mammals), and learn about their lives and how to protect their habitat. If you love nature, you’ll love YNC! This independent club is for children 5 – 14 years old and is supported by Nature BC (formerly called the Federation of B.C. Naturalists). A one year individual or family membership is $25.00, which includes 4 copies per year of “NatureWILD” magazine (full of information, puzzles, games and ideas for nature study).

For more information on the YNC and how to join, please visit the YNC website or send email to the coordinator of the BMN-YNC, Noriko Nakaya (bmnync gmail com).

Upcoming Explorer Days

BMN YNC Explorer Day in April
Pteranodon Walk at Colony Farm
Sunday, April 11, 2010 09:30 am – 11:00 am

It’s April and it’s a great time to see Great Blue Herons’ nests at Colony Farm. Our Pteranodon Walk in February had to be cancelled due to bad weather; we hope we will be lucky enough to have a sunny day on the 11th. Don’t they look like pteranodons when they are in flight?

Pteranodon

Our walk leader is Liz Thunstrom of the Colony Farm Park Association and BMN. Liz also organizes groups of volunteers who go out and count the herons at Colony Farm Regional Park each month. (Some of our YNC members have participated in these heron counts). The data provide critical information to Metro Vancouver staff on the farm fields most valuable to the herons. Although we are likely to see many Great Blue Herons, they are a species at risk. During our walk, we will learn why this is and why Colony Farm is so important for these elegant birds.

Meet the leader at the parking lot at the end of Colony Farm Road (about 1km from Lougheed Highway) at 09:30 am.

  • Please leave your vehicle locked, and with no valuables visible from outside.
  • The outing will be cancelled if the weather is very bad.
  • Dress warmly for the weather with good comfortable footwear.

BMN YNC Explorer Day in March
Mini-Monsters in the Creek
Sunday, March 28, 2010 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm

Nature WILD, the YNC’s quarterly magazine, has featured aquatic insects recently. Did you read the article? Aquatic insects will be the theme of our March Explorer Day, when the BMN YNC will learn about these tiny but important parts of watery and non-watery ecosystems. Our leader this month is Ruth Foster, BMN member and winner of the 2010 Environment Award from the City of Port Moody. She is well-known in the community for her many years of outstanding work with the Mossom Creek Hatchery, which she co-founded with Rod MacVicar. We will be looking for aquatic insects such as stoneflies, mayflies and caddisflies at Mossom Creek by the hatchery. We may also find the tadpoles of tailed frogs over there. Get ready to get in the creek!

Meet the leader in front of the Mossom Creak Hatchery at 1:30 pm.
The hatchery is at the top end of the gravel road, Mossom Creek Drive (north off Ioco Road), between April Road and the old Ioco School (now closed).

Parking is available in the big open space at the top of the road, leaving the area close to the hatchery for disabled access.

  • Please leave your vehicle locked, and with no valuables visible from outside.
  • The outing will be cancelled if the weather is very bad.
  • Dress warmly for the weather with good comfortable footwear.

BMN YNC Explorer Day in February
Pteranodon Walk at Colony Farm
Saturday, February 27, 2010 10:00 am – 11:30 am

It’s still a bit cold, but it’s time to resume our exploration of The Big Outdoors. For our first outdoor Explorer Day of 2010, we will go on a Pteranodon Walk at Colony Farm in search of Great Blue Herons. Don’t they look like pteranodons when they are in flight? Our walk leader is Liz Thunstrom of the Colony Farm Park Association and BMN. Liz also organizes groups of volunteers who go out and count the herons at Colony Farm Regional Park each month. (Some of our YNC members have participated in these heron counts). The data provide critical information to Metro Vancouver staff on the farm fields most valuable to the herons. Although we are likely to see many Great Blue Herons, they are a species at risk. During our walk, we will learn why this is and why Colony Farm is so important for these elegant birds.

A message from Liz:

At this time of year, Great blue Herons start to gather in quite large numbers before they begin nesting. We will be looking for herons and their behaviours and as well noting the ducks and small songbirds that call the park home. We may also see the first swallows. The exciting thing about a nature walk is that we never really know for sure what will turn up.

Meet the leader at the parking lot at the end of Colony Farm Road (about 1km from Lougheed Highway) at 10:00 am.

  • Please leave your vehicle locked, and with no valuables visible from outside.
  • The outing will be cancelled if the weather is very bad.
  • Dress warmly for the weather with good comfortable footwear.
